500 Metabolic Surgeries!

Why do I get the feeling we have done this before?

The feeling is called Déjà vu. It literally translates to ‘already seen’. Wikipedia describes it as ” the phenomenon of having the strong sensation that an event or experience currently being experienced, has already been experienced in the past, whether it has actually happened or not.”

The Bariatric Centre of Excellence at Netcare St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban has done 400 [500] surgeries to date since it opened in 2006. It has a high success rate of sustained weight loss as well as an impressive reduction in conditions like diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnoea.

The procedure favoured by surgeons at the centre is the gastric bypass, in which a small pouch is created from the stomach and linked to the small intestine, bypassing the larger part of the stomach and duodenum. The patient feels full after eating small quantities of food, resulting in dramatic weight loss.

Well done to Drs. Du Toit, Funnell and Partners on this incredible Milestone! Leaders in the field of Metabolic Surgery in South Africa
